This collection brings three different kinds of clever thinking to family game night—making creative word connections, using clues to solve a hidden-number mystery, and weighing probability and risk before making a choice.

Who this collection is for:
This collection is designed for boys and girls ages 8 and up, teens, and adults who enjoy games that are easy to learn but give everyone something interesting to think about. It’s especially well suited to families who want variety on game night without committing to long setup times or complicated rules.

If your family enjoys the creative connections and “How did you think of that?” moments in Blank Slate, this collection expands that kind of clever social play in three directions—cooperative word clues, logical deduction, and probability-based decision-making.

The games are short enough to play one on a busy evening, but different enough that families can also play all three for a varied game night.

What’s inside:
Cross Clues is a cooperative word game where everyone works toward the same goal. A grid of words creates intersections, and players must give a single-word clue that connects the two words at their assigned coordinates.

Finding one clue that makes sense for two completely different ideas requires creativity and flexible thinking. Just as importantly, players have to think about how someone else will interpret their clue. The result is a lively mix of vocabulary, association, communication, and teamwork—with plenty of satisfying moments when everyone immediately understands the connection.

Got Five! shifts from creative communication to deduction. Each player has five numbered tiles that everyone else can see—but the player cannot see their own.

By revealing information, asking questions, and interpreting clues, players gradually narrow down what their hidden numbers must be. Are they high or low? Close together or far apart? Do certain symbols appear? Each new piece of information eliminates possibilities until a player is confident enough to identify all five numbers.

It’s approachable deduction with a wonderfully engaging twist: you know more about everyone else’s numbers than you do about your own. Players practice logical reasoning, paying attention to evidence, and resisting the temptation to guess before they have enough information.

Bag of Chips changes the mood again with a quick push-your-luck challenge based on probability and risk. Colored chip tokens are drawn from a bag while players hold objective cards predicting what may happen.

As more chips are revealed, players have to decide which objectives still look promising and which have become too risky. Eventually they choose which remaining cards they want to count positively—and which one they are willing to risk as a negative.

The math stays intuitive rather than academic. Players naturally begin thinking about quantities, likelihood, changing odds, and whether the potential reward is worth the risk.

Together, these games create three distinctly different family challenges: Cross Clues asks “Can we make the connection?” Got Five! asks “Can I figure it out from the evidence?” and Bag of Chips asks “Is this risk worth taking?”

Why this collection works:

  • Offers three very different styles of clever play
  • Builds creative association and communication
  • Develops logic and deductive reasoning
  • Introduces probability and risk assessment naturally
  • Encourages flexible thinking and decision-making
  • Includes both cooperative and competitive play
  • Keeps individual games relatively short and approachable
  • Works across a broad age range for family play
  • Offers strong replay value without complicated setup

The common thread isn’t one particular academic skill—it’s learning to look at the information in front of you and think about it in a clever new way.

Why A Thoughtful Choice picked these:
We chose these games because a great family game night doesn’t have to mean playing three versions of the same kind of game.

Cross Clues gets everyone talking and thinking together. Got Five! provides a satisfying logic mystery. Bag of Chips adds suspense, probability, and those wonderfully agonizing “Do I risk it?” decisions.

All three have approachable rules and short play times, but none feels mindless. Children and adults both have real decisions to make, which helps the collection work as genuine family entertainment rather than simply a set of children’s games adults agree to play.

Together, they create a game night with conversation, deduction, laughter, suspense, and plenty of opportunities for someone to surprise everyone else with a particularly clever choice.

What to play next:
Families who especially enjoy the communication and wordplay in Cross Clues may enjoy Ages 10–14: Smart & Social Game Night for deeper cooperative and clue-based challenges.

Players drawn to the deduction and decision-making side of the collection can also explore Ages 8–12: Spatial Strategy Games, where Kingdomino and Battle Sheep add more planning, blocking, and strategic competition.
